male and female He created them

The Religion News Service brings us the happy news about the former Rev. Ann Gordon, now known to the world as Rev. Drew Phoenix:

About 18 months ago, after 46 years of feeling trapped in the wrong body, the Methodist minister had sexual reassignment surgery, at last aligning psyche and sex.

The congregation in Baltimore has "no large theological hang-ups" about the switch, according to the story.

"It was like, 'Okay, great, congratulations. You're living as God intended now. How wonderful,' " said Kara Ker, 33, a social worker and lifelong Methodist.

If God had intended for the Rev. to live as a man, you'd think that He, being omnipotent, could have arranged that. Still, it's reassuring to know that surgeons at Johns Hopkins are ready to correct God's errors in gender-assignment-- just as, come to think of it, Methodist ministers are ready to smooth out the rough edges of the Decalogue.

I wonder if Father Bourgeois is as undaunted by penalty from VOTF as he is by the Church. I bet he is. Nobody likes being chastised by their friends.

VOTF is not exactly a household word among Catholics. It's the Voice on a Soapbox warning that at any moment we will be attacked by rogue UFOs. Rather like Father Bourgeois come to think of it.

As a recent convert I am astounded at just how many Catholics seem to think that they can wield authority over the Church and over the number of people that probably truly believe that the Church has to constantly change to catch the wind of the times. A true "spiritual assassination" is what these folks are doing when they try to create the Church in their image.

    Themselves, and no other.
