"Bulletin: "Catholic Priestess" bounced from LAX before she could approach Obama," reads the LA Weekly headline. And if you didn't immediately catch the significance of those scare quotes, the story-- about Brenda Lee, the eccentric woman who tried to pass a note to President Obama, explains that she "described herself as a Catholic 'priestess.'" Scare quotes again.
The editors-- not just at LA Weekly, but at most of the media outlets that covered this bizarre story-- wanted to make sure that readers understood the poor woman is delusional. There's no such thing as a Catholic "priestess." You know that; I know that; the readers of LA Weekly know that.
Now if we could just convince them to use those same scare quotes the next time the poor delusional folks from WomenPriests hold their next ceremony...
