Impose your morality on us! Globe pleads with churches

By ( articles ) | Dec 12, 2005

In a startling about-face, the Boston Globe has recognized and applauded the notion that Christian churches have a key role in replacing private choice with public obligation:

"Our city is crying out for hope," said the Rev. Gregory G. Groover, pastor at Charles Street African Methodist Episcopal Church in Roxbury, at a morning service yesterday, drawing grim nods from the congregation. "Our children are being killed in the womb. The world is counting on us to be that moral voice and reclaim our community."

In fiery sermons, fervent prayers, and quiet, determined calls to action, clergy and worshipers across the city yesterday echoed Groover's prayer for an end to bloodshed and his vow for a more aggressive, unified, grass-roots fight against abortion.

Well, I did fiddle with the text a bit. Actually it was gun and gang-related violence that was deplored. Still, the Globe seems untroubled by abridgment of the right to free association or the right to bear arms, liberties threatened by the faith-based dogmas of a vociferous and poorly educated Christian minority. Perhaps too there were Second Amendment activists outside the churches protesting the erosion of the wall of separation ("Keep your bell-ringers off our trigger-fingers"), but the Globe decorously declined to take notice.
