hubris

By Fr. Wilson ( articles ) | May 06, 2003

Bronson Havard, editor of the newspaper of the Dallas Diocese, has explained that Rod Dreher's Dallas Morning News column of last Friday on the situation in the chancery office was motivated by the racism and xenophobiaMr Dreher shares with the Dallas Morning News. Bishop Grahmann is to be credited for the growth (from 300,000 to 850,000) of the diocese over these thirteen years; he has transformed the diocese and even the city into a wonderful, warm, welcoming entity. And the Dallas Morning News dislikes that, we are told, and certainly Rod Dreher dislikes that.

That's quite a spin; I've often seen the race card played, but never so shamelessly and foolishly. I hope that in his next column Deacon Havard tackles that charming, unprecedented incident at the end of the Kos trial when the Judge read a statement from the bench in which the Jury publicly rebuked the bishop for testimony they found un-forthcoming. He might follow that up with one explaining why the Holy See thought Dallas needed a coadjutor in the first place. The situation offers plenty of scope for the essay talents of the editor of the Texas Catholic.
