It's too late now, I suppose, but I had a brilliant idea for today's homily.
Use this Sunday, and the parable of the Prodigal Son, to appeal for support of the diocese.
Admit that the diocese is like the prodigal son: having squandered money, frittered away a priceless heritage, descended into the muck. Nevertheless, ask the people in the pews to be like the father: give the diocese a second chance.
Ideally this sermon should be preached by a new bishop. I, for one, would write a big check.
