gimme a break

"Pope takes break from scandal, visits Turin Shroud," read the AP headline, which was dutifully passed along by dozens of newspapers. The headline conjures up the image of a weary Pontiff pushing himself away from a desk cluttered with dossiers of abusive priests, rushing off to Turin just to get away from it all.

But wait. The standard criticism-- conveyed in countless AP reports-- is that Pope Benedict isn't paying enough attention to the sex-abuse scandal-- that he hasn't devoted all his public statements to the issue, even as the media keep churning out reports.

Maybe the headline should read:
AP takes break from scandal, pays attention to papal visit to Turin Shroud

As it stands the headline suggests that the Pope is almost obsessed with the sex-abuse issue. Well, somebody is.
