Episcopalian Chernobyl

For those interested in the state of the Episcopal Church, one recent issue of the magazine Christian Challenge mentions:

A young immigrant from Hong Kong joins an Episcopal parish in Boston and discovers that it is "a pro-gay/lesbian church." The Episcopalian Bishop of Pennsylvania, who writes that "Jesus was a sinner" blames Sept. 11 on "the dark side of God." The priest in charge of a beautiful church in California stages "rave" dances in the neo-gothic nave featuring use of "club drugs" such as Ecstasy and methamphetamine. Openly gay bishop in Utah says he benefits spiritually from the use of drugs. A Pennsylavnia rector is suspended from ministry for opposing ordination of women. Eight Canadian parishes secede from their bishop who promotes same-sex "marriages." Presiding-Bishop says the United States is rightly "hated and loathed" around the world for its "reprehensible" attitude toward poverty and suffering. Liberal Californian bishop goes on medical leave for "significant depression and anxiety." The splinter groups seceding from national church are multiplying. A bishop develops a "four-step program" for preparing same-sex couples for a "marriage" blessing. Massachusetts bishops charge that the Roman Catholic Church inspires hate crimes agaisnt homosexuals. Two Anglican bishops in Mexico are arraigned for embezzling $1.4 million in church funds, and a cathedral dean in Missouri steals $100,000. A Canadian priest is tried in a church court for comparing his bishop to Hitler. A Long Island bishop ignores protests and reinstates a priest who imported young men from Brazil as sex slaves. One of the first women to be ordained, a militant lesbian, and now a professor, declares she has "more bisexual students than ever before at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

We Catholics have our problems, but they are not declared to be doctrines. Anyone interested in democratically elected bishops and ordination of women, might want to take a look at this ecclesiastical Chernobyl.
