No, that can’t be the explanation, because this has been going on all year. Along with its more serious offenses—such as proclaiming that President Obama does not favor legal abortion—the Vatican newspaper has been prone to juvenile enthusiasms: praise for the film Easy Rider, a tribute to the Beatles, a starry-eyed elegy for Michael Jackson. And now we’re told that The Simpsons is “profound.” That’s the sort of statement a dim college freshman might make at 3 am, after too much… something.
