[Cardinal Medina's] letter had been expected to form the basis of the document from the Congregation for Catholic Education, but in the years since it was published, Vatican officials have said the eventual policy would be more nuanced.

The consideration of homosexuality may be more nuanced than it appears on paper, said the Rev. James Wehner, rector of St. Paul Seminary in East Carnegie.

A U.S. expert on priests and sexuality who has discussed the proposed policy with Vatican officials said Thursday that he expects the rule to be "nuanced, not an outright ban."
