almsgiving V

By Diogenes ( articles ) | Jul 16, 2004

Which archbishop, now retired, gave $500 to John Kerry back in 1989-- 4 years after Kerry made his first impassioned defense of legalized abortion as a newly elected senator?

The gift wasn't the archbishop's only venture into politics: he gave $1,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 1988, and 4 years later, he gave $500 to a Republican candidate who at the time was pro-life.

(a) Archbishop Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee

(b) Archbishop John Quinn of San Francisco

(c) Archbishop Francis Zayek, shepherd of the Eastern rite Eparchy of St. Maron in Brooklyn.

If you guessed (c), you're right. A reprise:

  • almsgiving I: Fr. Stephen Wolf (state chaplain, Tennessee Knights of Columbus; vocation formation director, Diocese of Nashville; board of directors, Tennessee Catholic Charities) gave $2,000 to the Kerry presidential campaign.
  • almsgiving II: Fr. Patrick Kennedy (Archdiocese of Denver; vocal critic of Bishop Sheridan of Colorado Springs) gave $250 to the Democratic National Committee.
  • almsgiving III: William Carroll (president of Benedictine University) gave $250 to the Prairie Political Action Committee, which supports Democratic candidates.
  • almsgiving IV: Monsignor R. Donald Kiernan (vicar general of the Archdiocese of Atlanta) gave $250 to Richard Gephardt.
