Parents to help decide whether to hand over Irish Catholic schools to the government Facebook Twitter November 13, 2009

Following a meeting between government education officials and Irish bishops and religious, participants announced that respect for parental choice was essential in handing over the administration of some Catholic schools to the state. 92% of Irish primary schools are currently operated by the Church.

“One of the things we emphasized strongly was the importance of the role of parents in all of this and the need to respect parental choice,” said Bishop Philip Leo O'Reilly of Kilmore. “Obviously, we are committed to providing Catholic education where parents want it, but we are also committed to diversity and recognize that need.”
