Pope, at public audience, follows up on social encyclical

July 08, 2009

Pope Benedict XVI used his regular weekly public audience on July 8 to explain some major themes of his new encyclical, Caritas in Veritate. The Holy Father told the people gathered in the Paul VI auditorium that "charity in truth is the principal driving force" behind human development, and only with charity in truth can a global society balance the demands of economic growth, social justice, and the common good. He said that the principles set forth in Catholic social teaching should "help humankind to feel itself to be a single family." He asked for prayers for the G8 leaders as they gather in Italy, so that their discussions might "generate decisions and directives that serve the true progress of all peoples, especially the poorest."
