Spanish government emphasizes World Youth Day cooperation with Church; 1.5 million expected

Despite the sharp differences between the Spanish hierarchy and government over abortion and other issues, Spanish Vice President María Teresa Fernández de la Vega met last week with Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela of Madrid to assist with the organization of World Youth Day. Francisco Vázquez Vázquez, the nation’s ambassador to the Holy See, said that the government is preparing for 1.5 million pilgrims to attend the 2011 event.
