JOSEPH (Barnabas)

Also called Joses. He is several times referred to as Joseph or Joset (Matthew 13:55; 27:56; Mark 6:3; 15:40), but he is better known by the surname Barnabas, which was given him by the Apostles and means "son of encouragement" (Acts 4:36), for his notable work in the early Church. (Etym. Hebrew yoseph, let him (the god) add; Barnabas, Aramaic, son of consolation.)
