A Catholic Culture reader's recommendation: “An amazing story of how love and a holy, hopeful marriage is life giving and faith affirming; and how marital infidelity causes hate, despair and destruction.”

This has to be one of the most distinguished and just plain useful cases for the incredible (but inedible) Samsung Galaxy Note 8 phone (there may be similar products for other phones). It provides basic impact resistance to an already water and dust proof award-winning Android phone, while significantly enhancing usability. Features: (1) View/receive LED notifications directly on the cover (alarms, calls, messages, battery status); (2) Respond to incoming calls or alarms by swiping; (3) Designate specific LED caller ID icons to know who is calling; (4) Store cards using interior card pocket. And my favorite: (5) Phone automatically sleeps when cover is closed and wakes when cover is opened.

Parents often feel uncomfortable talking to their kids about sex, but today a new challenge for parents may come up before it is even time for “the talk”: talking to one’s children about pornography. The average child now is first exposed to pornography at age 11; parents simply do not have the luxury of avoiding the topic, but neither do they have to face the challenge alone. This short, illustrated book helps parents to talk to kids about the dangers of bad pictures in a sensitive way. It is frank without being uncomfortable, cautionary in a way that will not make children feel afraid or ashamed, and appropriate even for children who do not yet know the details of sex. One of the authors is a licensed psychologist.

This is perfect for your mantel or home prayer space. But we found that some chambersticks are made by companies with links to the occult, so this one is hand-made in India for the UK company, Grehom. Also, chambersticks come in two sizes: Very small and light for half-inch candles (less expensive); and larger, heavier ones which can handle a 10" candle with a 3/4 to 7/8 inch base. This one fits the larger candles. Made of recycled brass, it is 2.3" tall and 4" wide, and weighs just under half a pound, making it very safe. Also available in silver. (See suitable candles in our section for House & Home - Things you may need.)

This is a highly accurate, beautifully-rendered and intensely moving portrayal of the reign of the last of the czars in Russia, the problems faced by Nicholas II and his family, the inordinate influence of the monk Rasputin (who was very likely possessed and all but impossible to kill), and the ultimate collapse of the Romanovs in the face of the Communist Revolution, including the murder of the Czar and his entire family. Released by Sony in 1971, starring Michael Jayston, Janet Suzman, Laurence Olivier, and Michael Redgrave (among others). Rated PG. Blu-ray, DVD and streaming. 183 min.

These unscented white candles are just right for general use and Easter, though you will want to buy colored candles for Advent and Christmas. If you use these in very small and light candle-holders, we recommend cutting them in half and, for the thinner half, stabilize with aluminum foil and/or melted wax.

The first woman to be proclaimed a Doctor of the Church, St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) was (along with St. John of the Cross) one of the great reformers of the Carmelite Order and a master of the spiritual life, including contemplative prayer. The Interior Castle is her autobiography, in which she recounts the stages in her spiritual development while illuminating also the corresponding stages of prayer for everyone. While this is perhaps the greatest work ever written on prayer, those just beginning to enter these deep waters might profit from first reading her spiritual direction for nuns, The Way of Perfection, which can also be helpful to all.

Celebrate the Faith with your kids all year round! For over half a century, Catholic families have treasured the practical piety and homespun wisdom of Mary Reed Newland's classic of domestic spirituality. You will find all the prayers, crafts, family activities, litanies, and recipes that will help make your children ever-mindful of the beautiful rhythm of the Church calendar. Newland shows how to celebrate all of our Catholic feasts, and explains why tradition accords special meaning to certain foods, colors, and symbols, and how these add to the incarnational character of Catholic spirituality allowing children to experience the Faith through sight, smell, touch, and taste.
