October 22: feast of John Paul II
April 12, 2011
The feast of John Paul II will be observed on October 22, the date of his installation in 1978 as Roman Pontiff, the Vatican has announced.
Following the May 1 beatification of the late Pontiff, his feast day will be inserted in the liturgical calendar as a Memorial, to be celebrated in the Diocese of Rome and in his native Poland.
In dioceses outside Poland and Rome, the feast of Blessed John Paul II may be celebrated as an Optional Memorial. To place the feast on the liturgical calendar, the bishop (for a diocese), religious superior (for a religious order), or episcopal conference (for a country) must receive permission from the Congregation for Divine Worship.
In its April 12 announcement setting the feast day, the Congregation for Divine Worship indicated that a diocesan bishop may schedule a Mass of Thanksgiving on any appropriate day during the calendar year following the beatification ceremony.
