Vietnamese police attack US diplomat during meeting with priest

January 06, 2011

Vietnamese police attacked Christian Marchant, a US diplomat in Hanoi, as he was speaking with Father Nguyen Van Ly, a pro-democracy activist who was recently released from prison. There were hundreds of witnesses to the attack.

“We are aware of and deeply concerned by the incident and have officially registered a strong protest with the Vietnamese government in Hanoi,” said US State Department spokesman Mark Toner.
