Bishop martyred by Communists beatified in Romania

A Latin-rite bishop who was tortured and martyred under the Romanian Communist regime was beatified on October 30 in Oradea, Romania.

Born in 1911 in what is now Serbia, Bishop Szilárd Bogdánffy was ordained a priest in 1934 and secretly ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Satu Mare (Szatmár) in 1949. Two months later, he was arrested, and in 1953 he suffered martyrdom.
