Pope Leo pays tribute to Cardinals Wyszyński and Mindszenty
November 05, 2026
Pope Leo XIV paid tribute to Blessed Stefan Wyszyński (1901-1981) and Venerable József Mindszenty (1892-1975), two prelates who were imprisoned by Communist regimes in Eastern Europe in the decade following the Second World War.
“Seventy years ago, the heroic Primates of Poland and Hungary, Cardinals Stefan Wyszyński and József Mindszenty, were released from prison,” Pope Leo said to Polish-speaking pilgrims at the conclusion of his November 4 general audience. “Recalling what Pope Pius XII wrote on that occasion in the Encyclical Laetamur admodum, I urge you to consider that peace is built on justice, on respect for the law, on dialogue, and not on violence.”
The Vatican omitted the Pontiff’s words from its English translation of his remarks.
