Bishops Flores, Boxie discuss ‘faith before politics’

November 03, 2026

On the eve of the midterm elections, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops posted two videos entitled “faith before politics.”

“For Catholics to put their faith before politics is a recognition that our Christian identity, our Catholic identity comes before our political identity, because we belong to the family of God first before any political party, and political identity is never more important than my identity in Christ,” said Auxiliary Bishop Robert Boxie of Washington, D.C.

The prelate spoke of the obligation “to have properly formed consciences, to know what the Church teaches and believes, and to evaluate candidates and political parties by those principles.”

Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville, Texas—the vice president of the bishops’ conference—said that “the partisan thing is what I would call a disproportionate allegiance ... You have to be willing to go into your party and tell them when from a Catholic point of view, they are wrong.”
