Pope urges continued prayer for peace, recalls Assisi prayer gathering
October 26, 2026
Pope Leo XIV called for continued prayers for peace as he recalled Pope St. John Paul II’s 1986 day of prayer for peace in Assisi.
“Let us continue to pray together for peace,” Pope Leo said to pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square on October 25, at the conclusion of his Angelus address. “The day after tomorrow, on 27 October, let us join in spirit with the heads of churches and religious leaders who will gather in Assisi to mark the 40th anniversary of the meeting convened by Saint John Paul II.”
“Never before has it been so clear that wars, as well as sowing death and destruction, impoverish and harm the world,” the Pope added. “May the Lord inspire choices of dialogue and peace!”
Pope Leo had planned to be present in Assisi for the 40th anniversary commemoration, but cancelled his visit on the advice of his doctors.
