Vatican newspaper spotlights cuts in food aid to Gaza

October 21, 2026

The Vatican newspaper devoted the most prominent article in its October 20 edition to cuts in food aid to Gaza.

Citing a statement from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Beatrice Guarrera, a staff religion journalist, reported that “half a million people in the Gaza Strip are now left without the vital food support they need to survive.”

“As of this month, the WFP is providing food and cash assistance to 1.1 million vulnerable people in Gaza, down from 1.6 million the previous month,” Guarrera continued. “Having received less than half the funding required for its operations in Palestine in 2026 compared to previous years, the UN agency has been compelled to halve food rations ... As a result, the WFP can now deliver only one food parcel instead of two to impoverished families, with the sack of flour also reduced in size, and provide a single hot meal every other day, rather than daily, to those living in hard-to-reach areas, such as those near the “yellow line” under Israeli military control.”

She concluded:

In a context where only one in five children has a sufficiently varied diet, and many families lack the financial means to purchase available goods, intervention from the international community is essential to prevent people in Gaza from literally dying of hunger.
