CWN Editor's Note: The leaders of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church will ask Pope Francis to appoint a papal delegate to resolve a bitter liturgical dispute in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly.

Cardinal George Alencherry, the leader of the India-based Church, announced the plan to seek papal intervention after a special meeting of the Syro-Malabar synod. The cardinal also said that the synod would not back off a demand for universal acceptance of new liturgical rules.

In the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly, priests have adamantly refused to follow the new rules, which require the priest to celebrate the Eucharistic liturgy facing the people.
