CWN Editor's Note: A Vatican tribunal will resume hearings on January 25 in a highly publicized criminal trial, with prosecutors expected to announce how many defendants will be charged with financial misconduct.
In December, the tribunal threw out charges against four of ten defendants, ordering the prosecution to re-start its case against them. The Tuesday hearing will allow prosecutors to announce whether those charges will be dropped or re-filed.
Preliminary hearings in the landmark case began last July, and are likely to continue, with defendants arguing that the Vatican judicial system denies them a fair hearing. Two recent decisions by secular courts, in Italy and in Switzerland, have been partial setbacks the defendants’ arguments.
