Irish Christian Brothers offer €161 million to residential abuse victims
November 25, 2009
The Christian Brother of Ireland have offered a €161 million ($242 million) package to settle the claims of people who report that they were abused as children living in residential facilities run by the religious order. The Christian Brothers, who administered residences for troubled young people during much of the 20th century, have been under heavy pressure to provide more generous terms to the victims of abuse that was outlined in the "Ryan Report" earlier this year. The religious order expressed its "shame and sorrow" over the abuse uncovered in that report, and offered a package including the surrender of playing fields, a €30 million payment into a government trust for victims, and €4 million for counseling.
