CWN Editor's Note: The Vatican’s Secretary of State sent a papal telegram of condolence following the death of the prelate. Born in 1929, Cardinal Aguilar entered the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretians) at the age of 16 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1953. He was appointed bishop of León in 1979 and retired as Archbishop of Pamplona in 2007. In 2014, Pope Francis created him a cardinal. With his death, there are 223 members of the College of Cardinals, 124 of whom are eligible to vote in a papal election.
