Vietnam: Priests savagely beaten; new demonstrations
July 29, 2009
Two priests were savagely beaten on July 26 in the northern Vietnamese city of Vinh. One of them-- Father Peter Nguyen The Bin-- was beaten into a coma, then thrown from a hospital window. The perpetrators, according to a statement from the Diocese of Vinh, were police and gangs acting on the police’s behest. Fresh protests against the persecution of the Church have sprung up in five cities, including the nation’s capital (Hanoi) and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
