At 2nd ecumenical event in Sweden, Pope thanks God for commemoration of Reformation

October 31, 2016

After joining in a prayer service with Lutheran leaders in Lund, Sweden, on October 31 (see separate CWN headline story), Pope Francis spoke later in the day at a second ecumenical gathering, with representatives of other Christian bodies.

“The journey we have undertaken to attain unity is itself a great gift that God gives us,” the Pope said.
“Our dialogue has helped us to grow in mutual understanding; it has fostered reciprocal trust and confirmed our desire to advance toward full communion.”

“I thank God for this joint commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation,” the Pope said.

The naysayers would do well to note that a commemoration is not a celebration. We commemorate the attack on Pearl Harbor without "celebrating" it.
