Maronite patriarchate backs Christian presidential candidate in Lebanon

September 28, 2016

The vicar general of the Maronite Catholic patriarchate has indicated his support for Michel Aoun to be chosen as president of Lebanon.

It is "quite normal" to support Aoun, argued Msgr. Boulos Sayyah, since the presidential candidate "enjoys the support of most Christians." He said that the patriarchate does not "prefer one candidate over another," but hopes for an outcome that would satisfy Lebanon's Christian population.

The Maronite Church, led by Patriarch Bechara Rai, has repeatedly called for the election of a president, to end a deadlock that has left Lebanon without an acting president for more than two years.
