4 cardinals take part in European ecumenical gathering

July 01, 2016

An estimated 1,700 people from 40 countries gathered in Munich on June 30 for “Encounter, reconciliation, future,” a three-day ecumenical gathering sponsored by Together for Europe.

“Five hundred years of division is enough: we have a commitment to unity, otherwise we betray Jesus,” said Cardinal Walter Kasper, the retired president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. “The unity of our churches is now even more important considering that European unity is in danger.”

Other cardinals scheduled to take part in the gathering include Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich, Cardinal Peter Turkson, and Cardinal Kurt Koch, the current president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.
