Maine approves same-sex marriage
May 06, 2009
Maine has approved government recognition for same-sex marriage, with Governor John Balducci signing a bill into law immediately after it passed through the state legislature. Vermont has already approved legislation to allow same-sex marriage, and similar legislation is pending in New Hampshire. In two other states of the New England region, Massachusetts and Connecticut, gay marriage was mandated by court decisions. Courts have also required legal recognition of same-sex marriage in California and Iowa, but California's voters overturned the court decision with a referendum vote.
