Sufi leader meets with Pope

May 12, 2016

Pope Francis received Baba Mondi, an Albanian Sufi Muslim leader, in audience on May 11.

L’Osservatore Romano reported that the meeting was characterized by “fraternity and dialogue.”

Sufism emphasizes ascetic and mystical elements of Islam, and Baba Mondi has served as leader of the dervish Bektashi Order since 2011. The two met previously during the Pope’s apostolic journey to Albania.
