Ali Agca, papal assailant, says he's now a Catholic

April 30, 2009

Mehmet Ali Agca, who attempted to assassinate Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's square in May 1981, now reports that he is a Catholic. Agca-- who has a history of making contradictory statements about his religious beliefs-- wrote to a French journal, saying that he wants to return to St. Peter's Square to bear witness to his new faith and pray at the tomb of Pope John Paul. (He also said that he is "looking for an Italian woman who wants to correspond with me.") A lawyer who represented Agca in Turkish courts pronounced himself "very skeptical" about his former client's alleged conversion.
