Cardinal: papal visit to Mexico was an ‘event of grace’

March 10, 2016

The cardinal archbishop of Morelia described Pope Francis’s recent journey to Mexico as an “event of grace” that “we continue to savor, study, and assimilate.”

Cardinal Alberto Suárez Inda’s appreciation of the papal visit, which appeared on the front page of L’Osservatore Romano, followed-- and contrasted with-- an editorial on the Archdiocese of Mexico City’s website which argued that the Pontiff was misinformed in some of his remarks about the Mexican hierarchy.

“To us, the pastors of the Church, he has left very great challenges,” Cardinal Suárez Inda acknowledged, including the challenge of reviewing “our style of life and our apostolic work.”

Cardinal Suarez Inda received his red hat from Pope Francis from Pope Francis in February 2015. His perspective on the papal visit appeared to differ from that of Mexico City's Cardinal Norberto Rivera, whose archdiocesan web site posted the critical comment on the Pope's remarks in Mexico.
