Cardinal Bertone angrily denies new reports of corruption

November 06, 2015

The Vatican’s former Secretary of State has angrily denied reports, based on leaked confidential documents, that he used funds from a charitable foundation to pay for extensive renovations of his Vatican apartment.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone condemned as “slander” the suggestion that the foundation associated with the Bambino Gesu hospital had paid for his comfortable retirement home. He insisted that he used his own personal funds to pay for the €300,000 renovation project.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera, the cardinal said that he was unaware of an invoice for the renovations that had been submitted to the foundation. “I saw nothing,” he said. He also denied that he is living in a large and luxurious apartment, saying that he shares the space with a staff of nuns who assist him.

If I am not mistaken, a religious who becomes a bishop is no longer bound by the vow of obedience to his former religious superiors. As he is no longer subject to them, they no longer provide for his upkeep. So he can have property. But hundreds of thousands of euros sounds like a lot.
