Chicago archdiocese removes priest from ministry, citing homosexual affair

October 06, 2015

The Archdiocese of Chicago has revealed that a priest has been suspended from active ministry because of an "inappropriate relationship with an adult man."

Father Marco Mercado, who had been serving as rector of the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines, Illinois, has left that post and will live elsewhere, the archdiocese announced. No further details were given about the priest's misconduct or the disciplinary action.

Father Mercardo released a statement saying that he had cooperated with the archdiocese. "As a human being I am not perfect," he said, "but as a priest my priority has always been the work of the Gospel and the struggle for immigrants and the most vulnerable." He apologized for the scandal, and asked prayers that the matter will be resolved quickly.

Ever notice how the Devil couches his evil behind charity?

I think this is notable for two reasons. First, when was the last time you heard of a priest being removed from ministry due to unchaste activity with an adult? Second, Abp. Cupich in particular didn't strike me as someone who would take a step like this. I'm grateful, and this needs to happen more often. Questions remain though, such as the age of the man (18 is very different than 40), and whether it was a pastoral or outside relationship. Regardless, removal is the correct response.
