Tyndale Bible auctioned in England

August 05, 2015

A rare Tyndale Bible purchased in a used bookstore in the 1960s has been auctioned by Sotheby’s for 60,000 pounds ($93,400), double its asking price.

William Tyndale produced one of the first English translations of the Bible. St. Thomas More and members of the hierarchy criticized him for his heterodox positions. After alienating Henry VIII as well, he was strangled and burned at the stake, one year after More's martyrdom.

"William Tyndale produced one of the first English translations of the Bible." Nothing to boast about. The first Catholic translation of the Gospels in the English of the day was written 800 years before Tyndale. The Psalms, Pentateuch, and other books of the Old Testament were translated into the English of the period by Catholic monks at least 500 years before Tyndale.
