8 beatification causes advance

In a July 16 audience with the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Pope Francis approved decrees on the heroic virtues of eight servants of God, who may now be honored with the title “venerable.”

The eight are

  • Metropolitan Archbishop Andrey Sheptytsky of Lviv (1865-1944), who led the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church during the last 43 years of his life
  • Bishop Giuseppe Carraro of Verona, Italy (1899-1980)
  • Father Agustín Ramírez Barba (1881-1967), a Mexican priest who founded the Sister Servants of the Lord of Mercy
  • Father Simpliciano of the Nativity (1827-98), an Italian Franciscan who founded the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Hearts
  • Maria del Refugio Aguilar y Torres (1866-1937), a Mexican mother and widow who founded the Mercedarian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament
  • Sister Maria Teresa Dupouy Bordes (1873-1953), a French-born religious who founded the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and of Mary and died in Spain
  • Elisa Miceli (1904-76), the Italian foundress of the Rural Catechist Sisters of the Sacred Heart
  • Sister Isabella Méndez Herrero (1924-53), a Spanish member of the Servants of Saint Joseph
