Supreme Court blocks enforcement on Texas law setting safety standards for abortion clinics

June 30, 2015

The US Supreme Court has temporarily blocked enforcement of a new state law in Texas that would have required abortion clinics to adhere to standards similar to those in place for other medical facilities.

By a 5-4 vote, and without comment, the Court granted abortionists a stay in implementation of the law, while they continue their legal challenges. The Supreme Court did not indicate whether or not it would ultimately decide on the merits of the case.

The Texas law would require abortionists to have admitting privileges at local hospitals, and set standards for safety at the clinics. Abortion lobbyists have said that these rules would force most of the abortion clinics in Texas to close, because they could not meet the new standards. They have argued, therefore, that the rules would create an undue burden on women's access to abortion.

SCOTUS continues to be a force for evil in our society rather than a protector of rights. I wonder when Justices Alito and Scalia will find the SCOTUS atmosphere too poisonous for them to continue, and that will be our loss. (I haven't made up my mind about Chief Justice Roberts because of his widely varying opinions.)
