Climate-change theorist named to Pontifical Academy of Sciences
June 17, 2015
Hans Joachim Schnellnhuber, a German physicist and prominent voice on climate change, has been named by Pope Francis as a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
Schnellnhuber is the director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and chairman of the German Advisory Council on Global Change. Last week the Vatican announced that he would be one of the speakers at the June 18 press conference introducing Laudato Si, the new papal encyclical on the environment.

From a 20 June 2015 article in the Washington Post, Anthony Faiola and Chris Mooney wrote: "A professed atheist, Schellnhuber nevertheless saw a chance for a massive coup in the climate debate if a sitting pope issued an ode to Earth and the ills of carbon emissions." Thus another atheist joins the Papal Academy. God help us.
