Place the Mass at the center of your life, Cardinal Parolin tells new priests

May 13, 2015

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, ordained two members of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to the priesthood on May 9.

The institute, founded in 1991 and based in Rome, emphasizes fidelity of the Magisterium and Marian devotion and consecration.

Cardinal Parolin cautioned against routine in the celebration of the Mass as he urged the priests to make the Eucharist the center of their lives. Quoting St. Francis de Sales, he said that “from now on, all my days should be preparation and thanksgiving for Holy Mass,” and quoting St. John Mary Vianney, added, “My God, how we ought to pity a priest who celebrates as if he were engaged in something ordinary.”

The prelate also called upon the priests “to preach in a language both simple and noble, that creates profound convictions, and to practice apostolic frankness combined with pastoral prudence.”
