Pope Francis will formally announce the Jubilee Year of Mercy at a ceremony on Saturday evening, the eve of the feast of Divine Mercy.
The “bull of indiction” proclaiming the Jubilee, entitled Misericordiae Vultus, will be released at the April 11 ceremony. The document announces the dates for the beginning and closing of the Year of Mercy, and explains the Pope’s purposes and plans for the observance.
At the Saturday-evening ceremony, which will be held at St. Peter’s basilica, the Pope will deliver the bull of indiction to the four cardinals who serve as archpriests of the major Roman basilicas: Cardinal Angelo Comastri (St. Peter’s); Cardinal Agostino Vallini (St. John Lateran); Cardinal Santos Abril y Castello (St. Mary Major); and Cardinal James Harvey (St. Paul Outside-the-Walls). To underline his intention that the Jubilee should be celebrated worldwide, he will also present copies to Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the prefect of the Congregation for Bishops; Cardinal Fernando Filoni, the prefect of the Congregation for Evangelization; and Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, the prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches.
