ACLU lawsuit targets Catholic aid to refugees, unaccompanied minors

April 09, 2015

The American Civil Liberties Union announced that it will file suit “to order the federal government to release documents related to how groups that are awarded government funding contracts are restricting refugee and undocumented immigrant teenagers’ access to reproductive health services, including contraception and abortion.”

One such contractor is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), which, the ACLU noted, “prohibits its subcontractors from providing or referring for vital services like abortion and contraception.”

“Recently, the federal government released proposed regulations requiring federal contractors who care for unaccompanied minors to provide access to contraception, emergency contraception, and abortion if a teen has been raped,” the ACLU added.

The Church should stop accepting or supporting this sort of thing. They will avoid being involved in such a pickle.

So what's the end game? Try to get Catholic charitable organizations to stop providing aid to illegal aliens on the border? Whom would that benefit?

Whoever is administering the refugee resettlement program should not be forcing women to be referred for abortion or contraception. This is a gross violation of their conscience and human rights.

I am sorry to say this, but the USCCB created this problem long ago when they began taking money from the government. Instead of teaching & promoting the idea of subsidiarity, they sold the church to the government. Take tax dollars & they expect their rules be followed. Stop taking tax dollars to be able to control how help is given. The bishops made their proverbial bed, now they must lay in it.

Among other reactions I have to actions like this, I find the ACLU statement to be comically ignorant. The phrase, "vital services like abortion and contraception," shows their ignorance of vocabulary. The word "vital" is derived from the Latin word "vita," which means "life." If only some 60-Minutes-type of reporter would grind them on how they decided that abortion and contraception are necessary to the continuance of life. That would be something to see, and it might make a few people think.
