Papal praise for cooperatives
March 02, 2015
Lamenting the centrality of the “god of money” and quoting Popes Leo XIII and Benedict XVI, Pope Francis lauded cooperative enterprises, called for investment in them, and offered suggestions for their development.
During a February 28 audience with 7,000 persons associated with the Confederation of Italian Cooperatives, Pope Francis called for the “globalization of solidarity” and advised cooperatives to create opportunities for unemployed youth and to assist women in their aspirations for work and family life. He also urged cooperatives to help older unemployed workers and to be a “protagonist” in promoting health care.
