Chicago priest pleads guilty to conspiring with late Mafia boss

February 11, 2015

A Catholic priest in Chicago has entered a guilty plea in a dramatic trial involving a deceased Mafia boss and a missing Stradivarius violin.

Father Eugene Klein, a former prison chaplain, was charged with conspiracy in the case. Prosecutors say that he helped the late Frank Calabrese, a notorious mob boss, to shelter assets from federal officials. Calabrese allegedly told Father Klein where he could find a violin that could be worth over $20 million. Federal prosecutors have been unable to locate the instrument.

Calabrese, who died in prison in 2012, had been convicted of involvement in 13 murders, and ordered to pay over $4 million in restitution. He reportedly did his best to prevent government officials from locating his assets.
