President Obama: abortion is a ‘core constitutional right’

January 23, 2015

In a January 22 statement, President Barack Obama described Roe v. Wade as “a decision that protects a woman’s freedom to make her own choices about her body and her health, and reaffirms a fundamental American value: that government should not intrude in our most private and personal family matters.”

Criticizing pro-life legislative efforts, he said that “I am deeply committed to protecting this core constitutional right” and that “the federal government should not be injecting itself into decisions best made between women, their families, and their doctors. I am also deeply committed to continuing our work to reduce unintended pregnancies, support maternal and child health, promote adoptions, and minimize the need for abortion.”

“Today, as we reflect on this critical moment in our history, may we all rededicate ourselves to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons,” he added.

Expedience and convenience are the base lines for his reasoning. He applies that to many things. Morally mired in relativism, he interpreted the judicial review of the Court on Roe as a mandate rather than as an exception. Whether utter cluelessness or profound malice leads him along is beyond my pay-grade. That such matters need to be confronted firmly and publicly seems evident; resistence is not futile.

The first step in moral clarity is to recognize the proper moral object. Moral object 1: a person's right to medical treatment. Moral object 2: a person's right to life. Premise 1: abortion treats a medical illness/disease. Premise 2: abortion kills an innocent human person. Which of the two premises is faulty? Premise 1 is correct if the unborn child is a medical illness/disease. Premise 2 is correct always and everywhere. In whose world is premise 1 correct? Not in the Catholic world.
