Marriage is the only institution that protects children, Irish columnist argues

Writing in The Independent about the recent Vatican conference on the complementarity of men and women, Irish columnist David Quinn emphasizes that the institution of marriage is distinct because it is oriented toward the raising of children.

But the very fact that the main supporters of same-sex marriage can no longer see that marriage is fundamentally a child-centred institution, can no longer see that motherhood and fatherhood are of special value, and now see marriage as an adult-centred institution alone, shows the harm that is done.

If marriage is redefined solely in terms of the partners’ needs and desires, Quinn observes, “society will no longer have a child-centred institution.”
