Break the stigma of autism, Pope exhorts health-care workers

November 24, 2014

Pope Francis spoke on November 22 about the need “to break through the isolation and, in many cases, the stigma that burdens people affected by autism spectrum disorders, and frequently also their families.”

The Pontiff made his remarks at a November 22 meeting with participants in a seminar on autism, organized by the Pontifical Council for Health Care. Pope Francis thanked those people who have provided support for people afflicted with autism and for their families. He encouraged research into the causes of the disorder and potential treatments.

Help for people with autism, the Pope said, “does not mean an anonymous and impersonal accompaniment.” He emphasized the need for personal care, preserving the dignity of everyone involved and listening to their needs.

After his remarks the Pope mingled with autistic children, embracing them.
