Turn to Bible, shun paganism, African prelate tells synod
October 09, 2014
As the Synod of Bishops began its discussions on October 9, an African prelate called upon the synod fathers to seek wisdom from the Bible.
Preaching at Midmorning Prayer, Bishop Lucio Muandula of Xai-Xai, Mozambique, reflected upon a text of the Book of Wisdom, which he said was most likely written in the second century B.C., when Jews in Hellenistic Egypt were at risk of abandoning their faith and worshiping idols.
The synod fathers, he said, should “allow ourselves to be guided by biblical wisdom in an ever more globalized world”-- a world in which there is a “risk of losing one’s faith in God, through adopting a completely pagan style of life.”
