South Sudan: government again threatens to close down Catholic radio station

October 01, 2014

Government officials in South Sudan have threatened to close down a Catholic radio state, the Fides news service reports.

In August the government shut down Radio Bakhita, in the capital city of Juba, for several days. The station was given permission to resume broadcasting, but warned that it should not include “political” programming. The Juba diocese is now assessing the situation, and the station has not yet resumed broadcasting.

Now a government official has criticized another Catholic radio station, the “Voice of Hope,” saying that it is a “destructive” influence and should limit its programming to “homilies and Gospel music.”

Fides reports that human-rights activists fear the government is placing restraints on broadcasters to restrict access to news about the civil war in South Sudan, suppressing public information about massacres.
